Huawei Protests Again Canadian Court's Decision on CFO

Huawei Protests Again Canadian Court's Decision on CFO By Techtonic group Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei on Thursday protested against the decision of a Canadian court on the company's CFO Meng Wangzhou, which has declined to invalidate a request from the US for her extradition. Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, is being sought by Washington on charges that she committed bank fraud and violated US sanctions on Iran by misleading banks about the business her company allegedly conducted in that country through a subsidiary called Skycom, reports Efe news. Attorneys for Meng argued that because Canada is not a party to the US sanctions, the charges against her do not constitute a crime under Canadian law. But in the ruling issued on Wednesday, Heather Holmes, associate chief justice of the provincial Supreme Court in British Columbia, said that Meng's interpretation of "the double criminality analysis would seriously limit Can...

UK Set to Shrink Huawei's Involvement in 5G Networks By Techtonic group Bowing to pressure from his own party members, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked officials to draw up plans to reduce Huawei' involvement in the nation's 5G networks to zero by 2023, the media reported. The UK's original plans, as recently as in January, was to allow considerable involvement of Huawei in the country's 5G network as Britain's intelligence agencies suggested that any possible misuse of the Chinese telecom giant's equipment for mass surveillance could be contained, according to both The Guardian and The Telegraph. The British PM wanted to cap Huawei's share in the country's telecommunications infrastructure market at 35 per cent. But the assurance of the intelligence agencies failed to stop political concerns in the country as many Conservative members continued to favour a reduced role for Huawei. The new plan to reduce Huawei's involve...

According to the country's Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, the move will prevent Huawei from using American technology to design and manufacture semiconductors (chipsets) by circumventing existing trade sanctions. In a recent interview with Fox Business, Ross said:  "There has been a very highly technical loophole through which Huawei has been able to, in effect, use U.S. technology. We never intended that loophole to be there" . These new regulations, he said, are  "a highly tailored thing"  intended to plug that loophole. Under the new rules, foreign chip makers that do business with H...
